Steps for Applying Window Protective Film
● Measure and Cut the Film: Measure the dimensions of the window and add a few extra inches to each side. Cut the film to size using a sharp utility knife and a straight edge.
● Prepare the Application Solution: Mix a few drops of dish soap with water in a spray bottle. This solution will help you position the film and squeegee out air bubbles.
● Clean the Window: Thoroughly clean the window using a glass cleaner to remove any dirt, dust, or grease. This step is crucial for ensuring the film adheres properly to the glass.
● Wet the Window: Spray the window with the application solution to make it wet. This will help the film stick to the glass and allow you to reposition it if necessary.
● Remove the Backing Film: Peel the backing film off the window film, exposing the adhesive side. Be careful not to touch the adhesive as this can affect its ability to stick to the glass.
● Apply the Film: Starting from the top, carefully place the film onto the wet glass. Use your hands to smooth out the film and remove any air bubbles.
● Squeegee Out Air Bubbles: Use a squeegee to gently push out any air bubbles from under the film. Start from the center and work your way out towards the edges.
● Trim Excess Film: Once the film is applied and all air bubbles are removed, use a sharp utility knife to trim off any excess film from the edges of the window.
● Smooth Out the Edges: Use a heat gun or hairdryer to gently heat the edges of the film. This will help the film conform to the shape of the window and create a tight seal.
● Final Inspection: Once the film is applied and trimmed, inspect the window for any remaining air bubbles or imperfections. Use the squeegee to smooth out any remaining bubbles.
● Coating: Material is transferred from a container onto a large roller, then from the roller onto the surface of polyester film. Examples include scratch resistant surfaces and adhesives.
● Laminating: A film coated with adhesive is adhered to a second uncoated film, using a roller system to press the two films together.
● Metallizing: A roll of polyester film is wound round a water-cooled roller in a large metal chamber, and the air is pumped out to produce a vacuum. A metal, usually aluminum is evaporated onto the cold surface of the film; very few metals evaporate in a vacuum so sputtering is used for other metals. Metallizing is a fast process compared to sputtering.
● Sputtering: Equipment very similar to metallizing is used, but a metal or alloy target is bombarded with positive ions to knock (sputter) atoms of metal out of the target and onto the cold film surface. A large number of different metals and alloys can be sputtered. Metals used in sputtering, such as Nickel, can also have extra resistance to corrosion.
● Coloring: Colors may be added to the adhesive before coating onto the polyester (as above) or the polyester film may be deep dyed. The color produced is usually a mixture of different dyes; in general, better durability is obtained using deep dyeing processes.
