Types of Stretch Film

Hand Stretch Film
Hand stretch film is a specific film designed for hand-wrapping pallets. It is best for lower-capacity packaging operations and slower turnaround. Designed with a hand-wrapping method in mind, the hand stretch film rolls typically weigh about 10 pounds when full.

Machine Stretch Film
Machine stretch film specifically fits onto automatic and semi-automatic stretch wrapping machines. These come in much larger rolls than hand stretch film does, as machines have a larger capacity and don’t have to worry about injuries or overextending themselves from lifting heavy stretch film rolls.

Cast Stretch Film
Cast stretch film is made using the process called case extrusion, which is when a thermoplastic material is continuously propelled through a flat die onto a chilled roll. This film type comes in different thicknesses that result from how fast the casting roll pulls the plastic away from the die during the case extrusion.

Blown Stretch Film
Blown stretch film results from the process of blown extrusion, which is when melted plastic is pumped through a circular die. This creates a thin, walled tube. Once air is allowed into the tube, the stretch tube can move to the desired width. Once this is accomplished, cool air is blown onto the film to cool it.

Pre-Stretch Film
Pre-stretch film is a film that undergoes stretching before it reaches the products on the pallet. It is stretched, sometimes, as close as possible to its resistance point—just before the point of breaking—and then applied to the load. This means that the amount of stretch film necessary per shipment is less, as the film can cover more area after stretching.

Color Stretch Film
Color stretch films are the best option to help with organization and color-coding. One of the most prominent issues in warehouses and distribution centers is disorganization. This is a huge waste of time and resources. One of the best ways to solve this issue is by introducing a system to help organize loads and make them more easily identifiable.

Main Stretch Film Quality Classes

Protective Plastic Wrap

Standard quality class

Standard grade stretch film has a basic tensile strength of approximately 150%. This is a suitable parameter when the task is to secure a load which does not require increased flexibility and tear resistance of the stretch film. Standard class films are the most popular choice for manual wrapping.

收缩塑料薄膜

Power quality class

Power quality class of the stretch film is more flexible, allowing it to stretch up to 250% (depending on film thickness). It is a common choice in the manufacturing industry. Power grade stretch film is versatile and can be used for small as well as bulky loads.

Flexible Polyethylene Stretch Film Shrink Film

Super Power & Ultra quality classes

Stretch film with high stretch classes such as Power or Ultra, is highly flexible and has a stretch capacity of 250 to 370%. This means that a metre length of film can stretch up to 470 cm without the risk of puncturing or breaking. Ultra class stretch film is among the most robust and flexible packaging materials.

Applications of Stretch Film

Palletizing

Stretch wrapping is one of the most straightforward and cost-effective methods of securing a load on a pallet for shipment. Simply put, the boxes on the pallet in a cube and wrap the stretch film around them. This can be done by hand or with the help of a particular machine to wrap pallets quickly and securely. Pallets of heavy bags, such as:
● Feed
● Fertilizer
● Earth
● Mulch
● Stacks of beverage containers
● Hefty 55-gallon drums or steel beams

Bundling

To bundle loose products together into discrete pieces for inventory management, selling, or transport, use a light hand or bundling/banding wraps. Stretch film can bundle together materials like:
● Tubes
● Rods
● Dowels
Or to aggregate small products into bigger units, such as:
● Bundle of tissues
● Paper towels
Bundling wrap or mini-wrap rolls come in three to five-inch widths for easy and quick application by hand.

Securing Rolls And Reels

Stretch film is used to keep rolled goods like carpeting, and wire spools secure. This is a simple and inexpensive method of preventing unrolling and unwinding during transportation and storage. Wrap the rolled or coiled material in a couple of layers of stretch film. The film adheres to itself without the use of ties or equipment!

Protection Of The Product

Stretch film is sometimes used to protect objects on the shelf from light. Instead of being packaged in a cardboard box for sale, picture frames and other consumer goods could be wrapped in a layer of stretch wrap. Stretch wrapping keeps products visible while protecting them from:
● Moisture
● Grime
● Scratches.
It is also useful for preventing the unintentional opening of buckets of liquids like paint or boxes of dry products during distribution.

Moving

Stretch wrapping is perfect for transporting large objects since it protects and secures them. It is commonly used by movers to protect furniture from scratches and scrapes during the moving process. It also keeps drawers closed, allowing you to move things like dressers and filing cabinets without having to remove contents from the drawers. These also protect industrial equipment. Moving parts are stabilized by a tight wrap, which lowers the chance of costly equipment being damaged.

The Correct Way to Wrap Stretch Film

Start with a Clean and Dry Pallet
Before beginning the wrapping process, it’s crucial to make sure the pallet is clean and dry. Any debris or moisture on the pallet can cause the film to slip or tear, which can compromise the stability of the load.

Use the Right Amount of Film
Using too little film can result in an unstable load, while using too much can be wasteful and costly. It’s important to find the right balance and use just enough film to secure the load without overdoing it.

Apply Tension to the Film
Proper tension is key to achieving a secure wrap. Too little tension can result in a loose load, while too much can cause the film to stretch and tear. Applying even tension throughout the wrapping process will ensure a stable and secure load.

Overlap the Layers
Overlap the layers of film by at least 50% to ensure complete coverage of the load. This will help prevent any gaps or weak spots in the wrap that could lead to shifting or damage during transport.

Seal the Edges
Sealing the edges of the wrap is essential to prevent the film from unraveling during transport. Be sure to wrap the film around the edges of the load and tuck it under the previous layer to create a secure seal.

FAQ

Q: What are the specifications of stretch film?

A: Thickness is typically expressed in microns or gauge, with standard stretch film thicknesses is 12-30 microns(μm) or 50 gauge – 120 gaude. Width is usually between 12 to 20 inches (30 to 50 cm) and can be customized according to specific requirements.

Q: What is the difference between blown film and stretch film?

A: Cast stretch film is the best choice for some uses, while blown stretch film is the best choice for others. For example, blown stretch wrap has higher durability and a high tear and puncture resistance.

Q: What is the shelf life of stretch film?

A: Generally speaking, stretch wrap is good for at least a year after you purchase it. However, that shelf life will vary depending on the manufacturer, where you store your film, and other factors. For example, temperature fluctuations can create issues with your film and cause it to expire sooner.

Q: Is stretch film food grade?

A: It is 100% hygienic and completely recyclable. Food-grade stretch film is usually used to preserve the freshness of edible products such as vegetables, fruits, meat, seafood, etc., and it prevents the entry of dust, germs, and any type of contamination.

Q: What are the raw materials for stretch film?

A: The raw material of the industrial stretch film is low-density linear polyethylene, referred to as LLDPE, with a relative density of 0.910-0.925. Traditional low-density polyethylene uses polymer-grade ethylene with oxygen or peroxide as the initiator.

Q: How is stretch film measured?

A: Knowing the different gauge levels and what types of product loads they work best for is a huge part of what to know about stretch wrap thickness. Gauge is measured in mils or microns. A mil is equal to one thousandth of an inch, and there are 25.4 microns in a mil. A higher gauge means thicker, more durable film.
